The Role
We currently have an opportunity for a Principal Statistician to join our Natural Perils division located in Sydney on a full-time basis. This will be a lead role in the statistical and scientific modelling of weather, climate and other natural perils risks in Australia, New Zealand and other regions, for the purposes of reinsurance modelling, risk-based pricing, major event support, and reinsurance claims settlement.

  • Lead the technical development of natural perils risk models, with an emphasis on weather and climate perils, for both reinsurance and risk-based pricing applications
  • Deliver technical pricing results to IAG business units, and collaborate with stakeholders on their implementation within pricing engines
  • Identify and solve outstanding analytics problems within the reinsurance area
  • Mentor, train, and manage team members to fulfil the objectives outlined above
  • Liaise and collaborate with the domestic and international scientific community, to address critical IAG knowledge gaps

Keys skills and experience required

  • Broad, expert-level knowledge of modern applied statistics, including spatial statistics, exotic regression models, and statistical computation.
  • Broad, expert-level knowledge of weather and climate science.
  • Ability to locate, access and manipulate climate and weather data.
  • Expertise in computational data analysis (R, Matlab, SQL, parallel computation, etc.)
  • Extensive (>5 years’ post-master’s degree) interdisciplinary and collaborative research experience in applied statistics, and weather, climate or other peril science
  • Extensive research-level experience applying computationally intensive data analytic techniques to weather and climate data, in order to arrive at actionable results.
  • Experience leading research initiatives.
  • Experience in a mentorship and/or teaching role.
