Applications are invited for the position of Team Leader in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac).
The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is the largest cancer research group in Australia, uniquely integrating basic, translational and clinical research with patient care in the setting of a specialist cancer hospital. The Peter Mac generates large amounts of genomics and other omics data that are providing fascinating new insights into cancer initiation, evolution and treatment. Much of this requires new bioinformatics analysis approaches. With its move to the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC), the Peter Mac is expanding its Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Research Program. This is the first of multiple new positions. Their purpose is to develop new independent bioinformatics team and group leaders aligned with the research themes and Peter Mac Research Division Strategic Plan, and complementary to existing bioinformatics expertise, as well as additional leadership in cancer bioinformatics or computational biology.
This role will involve the development of a personal, independent research program, as well as collaborative research within the Research Division and other divisions of the Peter Mac, and across the VCCC. This could include, but is not limited to research into: the analysis of gene expression and gene regulation; statistical or computational bioinformatics methods development; computational cancer biology; or personalized medicine or clinical informatics in collaboration with the Peter Mac Centre for Clinical Cancer Genomics.
The position will be for 5 years with excellent prospects for promotion to group leader at the end of this period subject to satisfactory performance. The team leader will be under the mentorship of A/Prof Tony Papenfuss, and will work alongside but be independent of the existing Bioinformatics and Cancer Genomics Laboratory. There will be additional opportunities for mentoring from other senior research staff and clinicians. The Peter Mac Research Division has a dedicated Research Computing Facility, petabyte-scale storage, and access to other compute resources in the precinct.
Applicants should have a PhD in a quantitative discipline such as bioinformatics, computational biology, mathematics/statistics, computer science, or physics and previously undertaken a post-doc in bioinformatics or computational biology. They should have an excellent track record relative to opportunity. Applicants should have demonstrated capacity to bring independence and creativity to developing new approaches to omics data analysis. They should have outstanding writing and presentation skills.
