The team: The Cardiovascular Research Group within the School of Population and Global Health is a research intensive unit undertaking epidemiological research into various cardiovascular diseases, with a particular focus on monitoring trends over time using linked administrative data. This position relates to one of the projects within the group, focusing on the epidemiology of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Australia, health service utilisation and costs, as well as factors influencing the capacity of the health system to implement proven strategies for RHD across the prevention spectrum. The project is aligned to the End RHD Centre for Research Excellence, with the data directly contributing to policy recommendations about the optimal mix of interventions to achieve disease control. Our project team consists of researchers with expertise in RHD, other cardiovascular diseases, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, health systems research and Aboriginal health from The University of Western Australia, Telethon Kids Institute, Menzies School of Health Research (Darwin), and a range of other research units, government departments and agencies around Australia.

About the opportunity: You will join the research team on an NHMRC-funded grant investigating the Burden of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in Australia. As part of this exciting new role, you will co-ordinate project planning and the day to day running of the project. You will undertake complex epidemiological analyses investigating RHD burden, and will work with the Project investigator(s) to ensure appropriate management of the study budget and reporting/administrative requirements and develop effective communication channels between internal and external project stakeholders and other collaborators. You will also lead the preparation of research papers for publication in scientific journals in collaboration with the other group members and write and review scientific content for reports. In addition, you will present research findings at national and international scientific forums, contribute to dissemination activities and workshops with key stakeholders and contribute to seminars and supervision.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • a PhD in epidemiology, statistics, health sciences or relevant field (exceptional Masters level graduates may be considered);
  • sound knowledge of research methods in epidemiology and biostatistics;
  • experience and proven ability in data management and quantitative analysis of large, complex data including merging data sets, data quality checking and multivariate regression techniques;
  • high level proficiency with data analysis software (e.g. STATA, SAS or SPSS);
  • project management and co-ordination skills;
  • a proven ability in the preparation and publication of manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals;
  • an ability to take initiative, work independently as well as collaboratively with a research team; and
  • highly developed and effective interpersonal and communication skills.

About you: a postdoctoral or experienced masters level public health researcher, you will have intermediate to advanced epidemiological/ biostatistics skills applied to the analysis of linked data and excellent organisational and communication skills, including recent experience project managing similar projects. You will also be passionate about translational research, working with low resource populations and in a supportive work place environment alongside colleagues with diverse research skills.
