• Are you interested in coastal climate projections?
  • Work with internationally recognised scientists & help combat these changes
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s premier science & technology research organization

The Position
CSIRO’s Oceans & Atmosphere is seeking to appoint a physical oceanographer/physicist/engineer with skills in coastal ocean modelling, the analysis of related data products and the development of strategies to address problems for engineers and coastal managers in the context of a changing climate. In this position you will apply novel techniques and analysis skills to communicate scientific results practically to maximise information relevance and uptake.
The position requires a strong numerical background, ability to manipulate and analyse large datasets, and strong communication skills to address coastal ocean challenges. You will be a key member of a team of scientists focussed on ocean processes which most strongly affect coastal stability, from operational to climate time-scales.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by developing original concepts and ideas for new types of analyses and/or adapting methods from other fields.
  • Contribute to development of scientific code for numerical modelling and extreme event analyses.
  • Be responsible for client liaison, data management and processing, and dissemination of data for existing and future projects in an independent manner.

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate and Post-doctoral research experience or equivalent research experience, in a relevant discipline area, such as meteorology, oceanography, coastal engineering, marine science, mathematics, physics.
  • Familiarity with national/international oceanographic/climate research products, e.g. tide gauge, satellite altimetry and climate reanalysis data sets.
  • Experience in running hydrodynamic and/or wave models, including pre- and post-processing data (e.g. extracting boundary conditions from oceanographic research products.

Who we are:
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Oceans and Atmosphere provides the knowledge to manage Australia’s marine estate and atmospheric environment, plan for and respond to weather and climate related natural hazards and ensure sustainable coastal development and growth of marine industries.
We imagine. We collaborate. We innovate. At CSIRO, we do the extraordinary every day. We innovate for tomorrow and help improve today – for our customers, all Australians and the world.
