Rutendo put science and maths into everyday use and help reduce or eliminate hazards in the workplace. She is a Health, Safety & Environment Principal at BHP.
Even though I enjoyed maths, I sometimes found it hard to understand. I always knew that maths would play a path in my future and fortunately, I had teachers in high school who encouraged me to keep on going and challenge me to do better.
Years later I now work for BHP as a Health, Safety and Environment Principal. My role aims to protect the health and safety of our employees and community through anticipating, identifying, assessing, communicating and controlling hazards arising from the workplace. Many people don’t realise that maths plays a big role in the protecting the health and safety of people. Day to day I use maths to measure and analyse exposure levels of chemicals, gases, ionising radiation and noise and work with maintenance and operations teams to put controls in place to minimise risk.
I love my job. I get to put science and maths into everyday use and help reduce or eliminate hazards in the workplace. Working in a male-dominated industry can sometimes be challenging – but I am fortunate to have leaders who have recognised my talent and have given me the opportunity to succeed through mentoring.
In the future I see myself leading and influencing the resource sector to be a place where the health and safety of people is at the forefront. I am passionate about using data analytics in health and safety and look forward to driving change in the way organisations operate.
